Monday 23 May

Here are some of our more recent arrivals, in the last 6 months or so, I am updating information in our orphan centre, so I thought I’d share it with you.  I hope to get pictures to post in here shortly:

TROUBLE
Male Vervet Monkey
Estimated Date of Birth 1.9.15 Date of arrival 23 November 2015
Trouble was confiscated from a local who was trying to sell him on the road side in Lilongwe. He was about 10 weeks old at the time. He was stronger and bolder than our other orphans,  so they were initially nervous of him.  He was placed alone, and after a short period of time integrated with Aboo and Affe.  They quickly settled together and Trouble remains happy in this group.

ABOO
Male Vervet Monkey
Estimated date of birth 27.10.15 Date of arrival 27 November 2015
Aboo was about 4 weeks old when he was found on the side of a road in Balaka.  He was very small and initially volunteers sat in with him to provide company and bottle feed him.  When older he was successfully integrated with Trouble, and Affe.  Aboo has always been very vocal and curious about people, perhaps because he was humanised by his early contact with people.  However it is  expected that he will be able to be released in the foreseeable future.

GAIA
Female Blue Monkey
Estimated date of birth 1.10.2014 Date of arrival 11 December 2015
Gaia was confiscated from a local who was seen trying to sell her on the roadside at Kamuzu Highway in Blantyre. Gaia had never met any other Blue Monkeys and did not know how to behave when she arrived.  To stimulate her she was placed with infant Frank, and it took a couple of days before she began to display a maternal instinct and interact with him appropriately.  Gaia and Frank are now firmly established as foster mother and infant, and will in time move in to our permanent Blue Monkey group.

AFFE
Male Vervet Monkey
Estimated date of birth 1 October 2015.   Date of arrival 15 December 2015
Affe was spotted by a volunteer from LWT who saw him being played with roughly by children at Salima Market.  The children had him on a leash and were dragging him around by his tail. As a result he was very traumatised when he arrived.  He was also malnourished and needed to be bottle fed, but because of his fear of people this was very difficult.  Initially he was kept alone to help him stabilise. He was then placed with Aboo and Trouble, and they quickly taught him how to behave.  Affe is still nervous and fearful of people, but he has recovered from his injuries and it is hoped he will be able to be released into the wild at some time in the foreseeable future.

FRAGGLE
Male Vervet Monkey
Estimated Date of Birth: 17 October 2015.           Date of arrival 17 March 2016
Fraggle was taken from a group of children who were playing with him in Salima.  He was about 5 months old and in very poor condition, weak and dehydrated with wounds on his face. His hind legs were underdeveloped and he was barely able to stand correctly.  His coordination was so poor he could barely walk.  He had and still has a very severe heart murmur which was probably present at birth. He was placed with Lulu who has been a good foster mother for him, and Cesar joined their little group in May 2016. We try to limit any stress when caring for him, and remain aware that he could die from his heart murmur at any time.

CESAR
Male Vervet Monkey
Estimated Date of Birth 17 October 2015.   Date of arrival 17 March 2016
Cesar was reported to have been found in a maize field in Cape McClear by children who picked him up.  A school teacher confiscated the money and contact LWT for help.  She cared for him for 1 week before he could be picked up by LWT.  He was initially given human carers and then placed with Lulu and Fraggle.  He has been successfully adopted by Lulu, and if all goes well he may be released at some time in the foreseeable future.

SYREN
Female Yellow Baboon
Estimated Date of Birth: Date of Arrival: 17 May 2016
Syren was confiscated from a woman who had hand reared her as a pet.  Syren had a rope around her waist and was tied to a bicycle.  She was in reasonable condition on arrival and was placed in an enclosure alone, where she was initially cared for by a volunteer who groomed her and helped her adapt to her new enclosure.  It is hoped that she will soon be placed with another Yellow Baboon, and in time if all goes well she may be released into the wild.

JERRY
Female Vervet Monkey
Estimated Date of Birth 18 May 2013 Date of Arrival 18 May 2016
Jerry was confiscated from a woman who claimed she had purchased him for 5,000 MKW. The seller stated he was with a troop of monkeys chased away from a local village, and the mother who had twins and left him behind because she couldn’t carry both.  It is likely that this story is untrue and the mother was poached for bush meat, and her baby placed on the illegal pet trade market.   Jerry is in good condition and it is hoped he will be integrated with a troop of Vervet Monkeys and eventually released into the wild.
